Mystery Tasmanian Item

Paul Fletcher reported this mysterious cancelled stamp from a recently acquired collection: a Tasmanian 1d Chalon ca. 1867-1870 cancelled with a crown over a straight-line letters – in a pattern of dots similar to, BUT NOT a perfin. The dot pattern is printed in black.  This stumped a number of collectors of Tasmanian perfins and revenues for awhile. But according to perfins expert John Mathews of Canberra, this is a fantasy item created by taking a stamp with the British perfin of the Royal Court of Justice (Crown/ R C J) and tracing the dot pattern with a black ink pen on to a fiscally used Tasmanian stamp. Mystery solved!             SAS/O
